Vale Sir David Gascoigne

DEGANZ marks the passing of Sir David Gascoigne, a respected lawyer, former judicial conduct commissioner and a passionate advocate for the arts.

Born on 15 January 1940 in the South Island, Sir David attended Marlborough College before graduating with a Master of Laws from Victoria University of Wellington in 1964. He built a distinguished legal career at Watts and Patterson, rising to chairman of partners and specialising in corporate law while maintaining a lifelong association with the firm.

Sir David leaves an indelible mark on Aotearoa’s cultural sector, with an extraordinary commitment to the local screen industry. He was instrumental in drafting the legislation that established the New Zealand Film Commission and served 15 years on its board, including eight years as chair. He later chaired the New Zealand Film Production Fund and led its transformation into the New Zealand Film Heritage Trust – Te Puna Ataata, safeguarding the rights, materials, and legacy of New Zealand cinema for future generations.

Beyond his screen contributions, Sir David helped shape organisations including New Zealand Opera, The Arts Foundation – Te Tumu Toi, and the Aotearoa Festival of the Arts, serving as a founding trustee in 1986 and board chair for the 1994, 1996, and 1998 festivals.

Moe mai rā ki a Sir David Gascoigne.
