‘Lomu’ Named Centrepiece Film for NZIFF 2026
Feature documentary Lomu, directed by Vea Mafile’o (DEGANZ) and Gavin Fitzgerald, is this year’s Centrepiece film at Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF)!
The film offers a complex and deeply human portrait of legendary All Black Jonah Lomu, exploring themes of identity, faith, and resilience. More than a sports documentary, Lomu examines the weight of expectation carried by one of the world’s first global rugby superstars, and the enduring legacy of a man who changed not only how the game is played, but who it belongs to.
NZIFF Artistic Director Paolo Bertolin shares,
Lomu is a thrilling and touching celebration of an inspiring contemporary hero. No need to be a rugby fan to be engrossed and moved by this quietly epic tale of a genuine soul and his resilience.
The film celebrated its world premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival in February 2026 and will make its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on 13 June. Its NZIFF screening marks the New Zealand premiere of Lomu at The Civic in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on 1 August, before the film travels to other NZIFF venues across the country.
