Screenlink: Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget

Writer/director Sam Kelly (Savage, Lambs), DOP Jess Charlton (Loimata, The Sweetest Tears) and DOP Richard Bluck NZCS (Black Sheep) weigh in on the creative advantages of filmmaking and collaborating on a small budget. We all want to make amazing work that looks exceptional. But what can you do when your budget doesn’t look so great?

Moderated by director Kathy McRae, this event was held in Wellington in June 2022 as part of the Screenlink series, and presented by DEGANZ and the New Zealand Cinematographers Society.

 

LGBTQ+ Film Festival Directors Q&A

Meet film festival directors Andrea Coloma (MIX COPENHAGEN), Spiro Economopoulos (Melbourne Queer Film Festival) and James Wooley (Frameline: San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival), joining us to discuss the rich histories and stories of how their Queer film festivals came to be.

Talking to filmmaker Kayne Ngātokowha Peters, our international guests discuss the social, political and creative landscape of gay cinema; and how New Zealanders can submit their films and join their global communities.

Write Room Wellington Selects Jaimee Poipoi

Congratulations to our member Jaimee Poipoi who has been selected to partake in Write Room Wellington 2021. Jaimee will join the programme’s mentor team as this year’s Producer intern.

Mentors include DEGNZ members Rob Sarkies (Out of the Blue, Scarfies) and Max Currie (Rūrangi, Everything We Loved), as well as Briar Grace Smith (Cousins, The Strength of Water), Karin Williams (SIS, Mou Pirir: A Rarotongan Love Song) and Vicky Pope (Savage, Two Little Boys).

The deadline for submissions to Write Room Auckland has been extended till August 30, 5pm. Write Room Auckland provides industry-leading mentorship for one Auckland-based writer working on a feature film script. Find out more here.

Rehearsal & Performance Workshops with Danny Mulheron

The Rehearsal & Performance series provides regular opportunities for directors and actors to practise their craft and communication. Each workshop brings in an experienced moderator to guide participants as they explore a workshop scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment.

This May, join us for workshops in Auckland and Wellington with director Danny Mulheron.

Moderator

Danny Mulheron graduated from the New Zealand Drama School in 1983, becoming an experienced director, writer and actor in all mediums – stage, screen and television. He is known as an ‘actor’s director’ due to his particular strength in directing actors and getting extraordinary performances. 

Danny has directed award-winning television dramas (One Lane Bridge, Jonah, Runaway Millionaires), feature-length documentaries and episodic documentary series (The Kick, Why does love?, Hillary), and smash hit theatre productions. In the 2020 New Zealand Television Awards, Danny won Best Feature Drama for the TV movie Runaway Millionaires. 

Danny is currently editing Under the Vines, which he co-directed with Erin White. The film’s set in Central Otago and stars Rebecca Gibney (Wanted) and Charles Edwards (The Crown).  

Preparation

Selected directors and actors will be expected to do some script prep beforehand. DEGNZ will provide the scene at least one week in advance.

Support A Girl Called Elvis

A Girl Called Elvis

Wellington filmmakers Miles Wilson (DEGNZ) and Lindsay Christopherson are hoping to raise funds for their project A Girl Called Elvis. The short film about two siblings growing closer through a family quest is expected to begin filming in mid-April 2021.

When 10 year old Ellie hears that her father is back in town, she convinces her half-sister Carol to help her reconnect with him. Together with Carol’s boyfriend Dion, they set off on their journey.

Funds raised through Boosted will pay for cast and crew wages, gear, locations, production design and rentals. Supporting the filmmakers through donations or by sharing the project is appreciated!

Upcoming World Premiere of Encounters

Eight emerging kiwi directors came together to tell eight stories of love, life and death in this multi-genre feature film. Encounters was designed to give up and coming directors the opportunity to collaborate and gain experience in the making of feature films. Seven years in the making, DEGNZ members and two of the films’ directors, Chaz Harris (producer and writer) and Scott Milligan (lead editor) are finally releasing the film to the public. The one night only screening will take place at The Embassy Theatre, on Wellington’s biggest screen, and will be followed by a Q&A with some of the filmmakers.
