Rehearsal Dynamics with Miranda Harcourt

Want to supercharge your work with actors? Rehearsal Dynamics is a full-day DEGNZ director’s workshop on March 7 with acting coach, actor and director Miranda Harcourt.

We will work practically with actors, referring to case studies and focusing on the directors’ skills of diagnosis, solution, preparation and communication using Miranda’s 5 tools:

Connection
White Space
Internal landscape
Vista + Objects
Journey

All directors will work on a task in break outs during the morning session. Then in the afternoon, six of the directors will rehearse and direct pairs of actors on 2-minute scenes, while the rest observe. The Guild will select the Director Participants and Observers (limited spaces) from applications.

About Miranda Harcourt

Miranda is an acting coach, actor and director. Miranda’s specialty is screen naturalism. Her approach is based on years of writing and performing Verbatim theatre in prisons in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, as well as her work as an on-set acting coach with renowned actors and directors on films all over the world.

She has taught at TIFF in Toronto, at NFTS and NYU Tisch, The London Film School and Directors UK in Britain, at AFTRS and The Hub in Sydney, at Toi Whakaari, The Actors’ Program, Otago University and Victoria University in Aotearoa. For seven years Miranda was the Head of the Acting Department at Toi Whakaari – New Zealand Drama School.

In her work with actors and directors, Miranda aims to shift paradigms, empowering creatives to realise their own talent. She introduces simple but innovative ways of thinking about and achieving connection and character. She has developed a series of tools and exercises for use in rehearsal and on-set that get actors to where they need to be, fast.

Group photo from Directors Toolkit with Charlie Haskell

November was a particularly busy month in events for DEGNZ. We ran a 2-day weekend Directors Toolkit in Wellington with director Charlie Haskell, which was greatly enjoyed by the directors in attendance.

The following week, DEGNZ vice-president Louise Leitch taught best practices for directing scenes involving intimacy and nudity in Christchurch on Saturday 23 November. Directors and actors left feeling equipped with valuable skills that they could put into practice right away. That same day in Auckland, members of DEGNZ and WIFT gathered for a Screenlink morning tea at Department of Post. Dan Best shared on what it’s like to work as the First Assistant Editor and VFX Editor for a film the size of Mortal Engines.

It was fantastic to see new and familiar faces at our Young Creators night Serious about Series. Flat3 Productions’ Ally Xue and JJ Fong gave an inspiring and useful session on working in the world of web series.

NZWG hosted the last round of the guild Table Reads in 2019. Writer/director and DEGNZ member Linda Niccol travelled up to Auckland with her producers to have their feature film script read. The team came away with lots of excellent feedback from the actors involved.

Our last workshop on November 30 was Rehearsal & Performance with actor/director Ian Hughes in Auckland. Ian led an engaging session with directors and actors dedicated to learning skills around director-actor communication, especially on fast shoots.

To top everything off, we celebrated the year with our members and other screen bodies at the three Screen Guilds Christmas Parties in November and December. Thanks to everyone who came!

You can find photos of our events on Instagram.

Ian Hughes’ breakthrough role was in acclaimed TV series and movie Topless Women Talk About Their Lives. Topless was followed by multiple TV guest parts (Xena, Bliss, The Brokenwood Mysteries, Go Girls) and film roles (He Died with a Felafel in His Hand, Memory and Desire). He wrote, starred and directed in his own Kafkaesque short, The Waiting Room, and toured his acclaimed one-man play Ship Songs.

Ian has worked with many of New Zealand’s top directors including Niki Caro, Peter Jackson and Michael Hurst, and is now primarily a TV and commercials director himself, with work on Step Dave and nearly 300 episodes of Shortland Street.
