Director Takes

Pan-Asian Screen Collective (PASC) in partnership with the Directors & Editors Guild of New Zealand (DEGNZ) present Director Takes, a series of conversations with leading Pan-Asian New Zealand directors who will share insights about the director’s role in the creative process, the delivery of their vision on screen, and thoughts on topics such as career development and representation.

The hour-long conversations will feature a Q & A, show excerpts of the director’s work and provide an opportunity to mingle with the director and network with other attendees in an informal setting.

Zia Mandviwalla, who has directed acclaimed short films as well as episodes for Netflix documentaries (Home Game and The Chef’s Table) launches the series on the topic of ‘The Director and Subject’ on Tuesday 23 March at 6:30pm. This will be followed by Roseanne Liang’s session titled ‘The Director-Writer’ on 6 April and Rajneel Singh’s 27 April session, ‘The Technical Director’. A further two sessions will be announced.

The sessions are free of charge and will be held at the Covert Theatre, on Mackelvie St in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Tickets are available on a first come first served basis through DEGNZ’s website with priority given to PASC and DEGNZ members. There will be an optional $5 cash koha at the door for non-members who wish to contribute to PASC’s activities.

“I’ve always loved hearing from other directors about their challenges, experiences and thought processes in driving their projects to completion,” says PASC Executive Committee member, Roseanne Liang. “I’m hopeful that these sessions can inspire, educate, motivate and connect – especially when we can finally get to see each other face to face!”

Following each session, an invited guild representative will be available to answer questions or talk about upcoming guild activities and opportunities.
